Archivematica-as-a-Service (AaaS)

Archivematica is an open-source digital preservation system designed to maintain standards-based, long-term access to collections of digital objects. COPPUL offers Archivematica-as-a-Service (AaaS) to members and other partners wishing to preserve digital holdings without installing and locally managing Archivematica instances.

Shared service model

The service is a joint effort of COPPUL, Artefactual Systems, and the University of British Columbia (UBC) through their EduCloud Server Service. COPPUL promotes the service, signs up new institutions and provided seed funding for the one-time set-up costs; Artefactual Systems provides installation, ongoing technical support and user training; and UBC provides a fee-based server hosting and digital object storage and back-up service.

Benefits

  • Access to an widely-used, standards-based, open-source digital preservation platform and community, without the need for local IT resources to support installation, maintenance, and hosting.
  • Training and technical support services from experienced Archivematica developers and digital preservation specialists with a strong understanding of academic library needs.
  • Centralized system administration at a much lower cost than paying for a local system administrator.

Hosting and digital object storage and back-up are provided through UBC's EduCloud Server Service, a community cloud-based service for the public Higher Education community of British Columbia. This cloud computing service meets British Columbia provincial privacy requirements under the FIPPA legislation and offers the benefits of a Virtual Server Service such as server consolidation, resource pooling, high availability of the service, and regular backups.

Three different service levels are available to member institutions. All service levels include access to an Archivematica installation on a dedicated virtual machine.
